Former England striker Robbie Fowler, who scored from the spot against Sheffield United on the opening day of the season, converted two more penalties following two fouls on captain Steven Gerrard.

Defender Sami Hyypia grabbed his first league goal of the season to make it 3-0 before Gerrard rounded off the scoring.

Liverpool broke a top-flight club record of eight successive clean sheets at Anfield. United's defeat was their fifth in a row on their travels.
